Senior Director of Lehmann Maupin Seoul, Emma Son, shares her side of Seoul for the occasion of the inaugural Frieze Seoul.
FAVORITE SPOT TO FIND INSPIRATION
Namsan Park is my favorite go-to place to find inspiration in Seoul. The park is known as a tourist landmark, but it is also vast enough that you could enjoy quietude and a magical outlook toward Seoul. Viewing the busy city from a distance reminds you of the different perspectives you may not get in your daily life.
BEST OFF-THE-BEATEN-PATH PLACE TO SEE ART
I would visit the Euljiro neighborhood to find young emerging artists in Korea. The Sewoon Arcade is one of the oldest and the rarest places, where you can find electronic parts and tools in the heart of the city. You'll encounter a number of artist studios or discover some experimental exhibitions as you roam around the area.
BEST-KEPT SECRET IN SEOUL
I have been privileged to experience the two best-kept secrets in Seoul. One is the amazing view of Seoul’s skyline, especially at dusk, that you can view from Lee Bul’s studio in the Seongbuk-dong neighborhood. The other place is the house of the late artist Suh Se Ok. This gem in the busy city of Seoul also in the Seongbuk-dong neighborhood houses both traditional and modern buildings alongside a beautiful garden. Once you step into the pathway through a magnificent wooden gate, you feel as if you’ve taken a time capsule and find yourself in the secret garden of an aristocrat’s home from Joseon Dynasty.
