To learn more about his favorite spots in Miami, Whitewall spoke with Rich Medina, Interdisciplinary Artist & Music Director of Dante’s HiFi.
FAVORITE SPOT TO FIND INSPIRATION
With Sol Box Gymnasium in my humble opinion, Djinji Brown is one of the best boxing coaches in the country. There’s something magical about watching people learn how to defend themselves and get in shape all at once, no matter the experience level.
BEST OFF-THE-BEATEN-PATH PLACE TO SEE ART
One would be Red Rooster Overtown where Derek Fleming has curated a bounty of some of the most prominent contemporary African American artists inside the restaurant, and the visual atmosphere and design only make the incredible menu by Marcus Samuelsson taste even better. The second would be Hampton Art Lovers at the Historic Ward Rooming House Gallery, which is owned and curated by my good friend Christopher Norwood J.D. Christopher’s curation is rooted in the desire to make contemporary African American art accessible to the local African American community.
BEST-KEPT SECRET IN MIAMI
Take a look around in Little Haiti and ask about a little unassuming kitchen, tucked into the back of a little unassuming bodega somewhere in the NE 70s street numbers. It’s some of the absolute best West Indian comfort food on the planet. Go get your spyglass and figure out how to get there stat.
